Start
your Himalayan journey at the Banjara Camp in Chail
and carry on to Sangla and Tabo. Chail is also good
for a quick refreshing weekend break. Chail is 45
kms short of Shimla and a few hundred metres higher.
The picturesque town is set amidst thick deodar
forests and owes its existence to the Maharaja of
Patiala who wanted to build his palace on a hill
from where he could look down at Shimla. The Banjara
Camp at Chail is set in a little clearing at the top
of a hill, a couple of kilometers beyond the town
from where you have a clear view of the Shimla
valley. Cosy Swiss-style tents with attached
bathrooms are ringed around the clearing and the
view of the night-lights of Shimla is truly
stunning.
